Associated Supermarket Group, the largest group of independently operated supermarkets based in the New York metropolitan area, has joined the movement to sell only cage-free eggs.

The group has announced that through the Associated, Compare, Met, Pioneer and Metropolitan City Foods banners, it will transition away from eggs raised from caged hens.

“We are aware of the issue regarding cage-free eggs and intend to continue to strive to meet the needs of our customers while working in good faith with our egg suppliers with the intention of offering 100 percent cage-free eggs by December 31, 2015,” the company stated.

Associated Supermarket Group’s announcement comes about a year after nearly every major supermarket chain announced commitments to stock and sell only cage-free eggs, although the time frames to when those pledges would be fulfilled varied.

Albertsons Companies has since expanded its commitment, by pledging to add liquid eggs to its cage-free egg pledge. The company stated it will make that change by 2025, based on available supply.
