Cal-Maine Foods Inc. completed its acquisition of Texas-based Happy Hen Egg Farms Inc.

On March 3, the Jackson, Mississippi, company announced it closed the acquisition of substantially all of the assets of Happy Hen, and its affiliates, related to their commercial production, processing, distribution and sale of shell eggs business. In the deal, Cal-Maine acquired commercial egg production and processing facilities with current capacity for about 350,000 layers and related distribution facilities located near Harwood and Wharton, Texas, according to a release.

Happy Hen’s current site is designed for capacity of up to 1.2 million layers. When the company initially announced the transaction, Cal-Maine CEO and Chairman Dolph Baker said the acquired assets are near existing Cal-Maine facilities and his company plans on capitalizing on market opportunities created by the additional production capacity.

Cal-Maine, with a flock of 37.94 million laying hens, is the top U.S. egg producer of 2016. Acquisitions continue to be a growth strategy for Cal-Maine. The Happy Hen move came shortly after the company closed its acquisition of Foodonics International Inc. and its entities doing business as Dixie Egg Co. in November 2016.
